In general, Maine’s sushi scene leaves much to be desired. Many of the local favorites that seem to draw crowds aren’t particularly good. I think I’ve tried every sushi place in southern Maine, and in our search, I’ve found two great exceptions. These two spots offer sushi that would hold their own in NYC or LA, so we’re lucky to have them available to us here in Maine.

Top Pick: Elevation Sushi and Tacos

I’m not quite sure what to say, but Elevation Sushi and Tacos offers very simply sushi of exceptional quality. The fish is clearly fresh, the flavors are balanced, and the presentation is simple and easy. I’d recommend keeping it easy and going with the chef’s choice / omakase, and adding a sushi taco or a couple of maki rolls on the side.

I’d heard this place was really good, but didn’t believe it until I was able to try it for myself. Near perfect sushi in Bridgeton, Maine?

Runner-Up: Mr. Tuna

Mr. Tuna takes the art of sushi seriously. Specializing in Edo-style sushi, each plate is a work of art, with perfectly seasoned rice, fresh fish, and when called for, the perfect amount of wasabi (and it is real wasabi).

Unfortunately, since they moved to their new location, Mr. Tuna no longer serves nigiri sushi, which is why I have them as the runner-up. Their hand rolls are as good as ever, though. Other highlights include the hamachi with marinated shishito peppers and their ever-popular spicy scallop rolls.

If you’ve been disappointed by sushi in Maine, these two spots are worth seeking out. Whether you’re in Bridgton or Portland, Elevation Sushi and Tacos and Mr. Tuna deliver an experience that rivals the best sushi anywhere.
